Early Life

Learnmore Mwanyenyeka, Aka Learnmore Jonasi, was born on 22nd August 1993. He was brought up in Mutare, Manicaland, Zimbabwe, by his mother. He never asked the name of his father and never met him.

His mother’s name is Memory Mwanyenyeka, a Kindergarten teacher in South Africa. Learnmore Jonasi was later raised by his grandparents, Partson Mwanyenyeka and Lillian Mwanyenyeka, in Chimanimani. His grandfather, Partson Mwanyenyeka, was a government pensioner.

In 1999, he went to Chimanimani Primary School, where he was reading in Grade 1 at that time. When his grandfather had the complete cut back from his government job, the grandparents and Learnmore all went to Mutare, where he continued with his education.

He later went to Sheni Primary School from Grade 3. In 2006, he went back to Chimanimani High School and joined Chimanimani High School. He received the ZIMSEC General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level in 2010.

Career

Learnmore Jonasi completed his O level in education in 2010. After that, he went to Harare, where he wanted to start his comedy journey, but Learnmore had no one in the foreign land with whom he could stay, like any relative or any family member. In 2011, he thought of starting a comedy club after he went to Bulawayo, but he found none.

In 2012, he left for Harare and got his first project on 9th October 2012. He performed at the Simuka Comedy Night hosted at Book café, where the audience booed him. For nearly two years, he could not make people laugh at his jokes, but still, he would come back and do his comedy at open mic every Monday.

Earlier, there was a time when Learnmore Jonasi used to joke about things, but no one would listen to him and his village jokes. He was rudely and strongly disapproved by many as a comedy man. In 2014, he went back to Bulawayo, where a new comedy club was formed. The comedy club was named Umahlekisa.

There, he was helped by the founder of the club so that he could do better comedy on stage. He earned the stage name “The Village Boy from Chimanimani” because of his village jokes. Afterward, he went on to attend various comedy clubs and theatres and went on to numerous comedy tours.

After he came to the United Kingdom, he did a course with Laughing Horse to improve his skills. He then went back to Harare, Zimbabwe, where he hosted the second one-person show titled The Village Boy at the Reps Theatre on 22nd June 2016. He then attended various comedy festivals and would perform or work for continuously three days.

He performed at the Swaziland International Comedy Festival, the Major Moves Comedy Nights in Botswana, the Kampala Comedy Festival, the Kigali International Comedy Festival, and others. He then started being called a professional standup comedian.

In April 2019, he won the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA). He then earned another NAMA award in March 2020 for being the Outstanding Comedian of the Year. Since then, he has been working for television. He had his first television show, Mzansi Comedy Nights 2018.
