Early Life
Victoria Arlen was born on 26th September 1994 in New Hampshire, USA, as one of the triplets with two brothers. Her parents are Jacquline and Larry Arlen while William and Cameron are her brothers. Her father played hockey for the Quinnipiac Bobcats and her brothers also had some involvement in the sport.
Arlen herself had a passion for swimming from the age of 5 when she was attending school in Leningrad. However, her life was not very smooth and she had to face a tough phase when she was only 11 years old.
Victoria Arlen has two very complicated diseases: transverse myelitis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. These conditions rendered her a bedridden patient, unable to move her limbs or even talk, and was in a coma for about three and a half years.
She was alert to all that was happening in the environment around her but unable to speak or control her body movements, and was described as ‘locked in’. This was because doctors informed her that she would not survive the illness and they were right.
However, following four years in that state, there was a major development when a new drug reduced her seizures. However, in 2010, Victoria Arlen made a spectacular comeback to the pool. Her love for swimming was rekindled when she was nine years old after being bedridden for almost a decade and her brothers played an important part in helping her get back into the water.
Six months later, in June 2012, she made it to the London Paralympics, a great feat given that she had only resumed swimming in 2011. Swimming for Team USA, she earned four medals of which one was gold and three were silver making her one of the best Paralympic swimmers.
