Pierre Thomas was born in 1962, making him 62 years old as of 2024. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, and raised in Monroe, Virginia, as one of his parents’ fifth children. He is the youngest in the family, and his parents’ names are Nathaniel Thomas and Bertha Helen Brown Thomas.
Pierre graduated from Amherst County High School in 1980 and later enrolled at Virginia Tech, where he graduated in 1984 with a degree in Communication Studies. He began his career as an intern for the university’s radio station, WVTF, in nearby Roanoke, Virginia.
Career
Pierre began his professional work for The Roanoke Times and moved to The Washington Post in 1987. There, he worked for nearly ten years, where his senior, Ben Bradlee, guided and mentored him.
After that, Pierre switched jobs and became a correspondent at CNN in 1997, where he worked as a justice correspondent. In 2000, Thomas began working for ABC News. After joining the ABC News channel in 2000, he won the PrimeTime Emmy Award for covering the events of 11th September 2001.
He received another Emmy Award for covering President Obama’s inauguration in 2009. In 2012, he received the Journalist of the Year award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
He received the award for his report on the shooting of U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords and also on the breaking stories around the death of Osama bin Laden. He then received the John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award in 2015 from the Radio Television Digital News Association for contributing to the journalism industry and freedom of the Press.
