Kai Asakura attended Toyohashi Technical High School in Aichi Prefecture. In his third year Mikuru took him to the Zen Dokai Toyohashi Dojo. That incident was a crucial turning point in his growth as a mixed martial artist. There’s no convincing proof that he went to university.

His brother is Mikuru Asakura. Mikuru Asakura is a popular Japanese MMA fighter and YouTube star. Kai decided to become a professional fighter, and Mikuru had a lot to do with that. The brothers then became training partners and business partners.
Their similar history helped develop the Asakura moniker in the sphere of Japanese combat sports. Kai’s own career in RIZIN and then the UFC also brought more focus on him with Mikuru’s success.
Career
Kai Asakura made his professional MMA debut in 2012. He started his career fighting for Japanese promotions such as DEEP, Fighting Network RINGS, and eventually Road Fighting Championship. He became known as a powerful striker and finisher of his opponents.
His big break came in 2017 when he signed with the RIZIN Fighting Federation. Asakura scored a bunch of big wins over known fighters and became one of the promotion’s top bantamweights. One of his biggest wins in his early career came in August 2019 when he knocked out Kyoji Horiguchi in the first round.
In 2020, Asakura won the Rizin Bantamweight Championship for the first time. He won the title back in December 2023 by defeating Juan Archuleta. Archuleta missed weight; hence, only Asakura could win the vacant championship. Eventually, Asakura gave up the belt before signing with the UFC.
Kai Asakura made his UFC debut in December 2024 at UFC 310 in Las Vegas against Alexandre Pantoja. It was for the UFC Flyweight Championship. Pantoja finished him in the second round with a rear naked choke. Asakura then fought Tim Elliott at UFC 319 in August 2025 and lost again by submission.
The losses sent Asakura back to the bantamweight division. He fought Cameron Smotherman on 30 May 2026 at UFC Macau. Asakura knocked out Smotherman at 1:50 of round one to improve to 22-6 as a pro for his first UFC victory.
Asakura will battle Aoriqileng in UFC Shanghai on August 29, 2026. The bout will mark his second UFC outing at bantamweight. He’s claimed he wants to stake his claim as one of the top attackers in the division and stay active every three or four months.
